"People in the Council challenge me to try things I never dreamed of doing. 2022 looks to be a big year for advocacy in South King County. We invite you to dream big with us." Gaylen was the graphics editor with a newspaper in Illinois when her vision took a dive. Now she lives in Federal Way and is a Computer and Assistive Technology Instructor at the Seattle Lighthouse.

Meka works at the Low Vision Store and marketing department at the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. She's been instrumental in hosting Zoom community calls across the U.S. She has been in the Council since 2001. "I joined WCB shortly before my 21st birthday and grew up in this organization. The Council to me is one big family–a family that I love dearly. Gaining confidence in myself, I now take on projects that I never imagined."

Our Constitution and bylaws

The little chapter that could

South King Council of the Blind was established February, 2005 so that people in our area could connect. We are an affiliate of the Washington Council of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind. Our chapter is a nonprofit organization registered with the State of Washington.

Founding members were Telea Noriega, Maida Pojtinger, Ron Fredrickson, Jan Klerekoper, and Gaylen Floy. We were dubbed "the little chapter that could” and here's why.

We jump started collaboration between chapters, organizing and promoting the Seattle Super Picnic. We sponsored the WCB state convention in 2006, 2015, and 2018. We generated a national discussion about disaster preparation for the disabled after Katrina. We hosted a very successful cooking workshop for visually impaired kids with a blind chef and a self-defense workshop for high school students. WCB named us “Chapter of the Year” three times. We are a sponsor of King County’s first Beep Baseball team and looking at new opportunties to raise awareness.

About the SKB logo

We did not want a cliche mark. We wanted something that reflected our desire to reach out to our local community. The Saskatoon Berry is an indigenous shrub with edible fruit. The three leaves and berries stand for our motto: 1) Education, 2) Growth, and 3) Independence. The logo was designed in Adobe Illustrator by Gaylen Floy in 2005.
